When And On What Occasion Can One Wear Pearls?

When I was a schoolboy, I used to visit the jewelry store which my father operated.

Very often then, while I was there, I noticed that not many women customers of my father wore pearl jewelry.

If at all, those who wore pearl jewelry confined themselves with just wearing a single strand pearl necklace round their necks, often choker-length.

While the tradition and etiquette on pearl jewelry wearing then was mainly wearing a single-strand pearl necklace, however, over the years, as with so many other things, the rules have gone out the window and pearls and the ways that they are worn are no exception!

Fast forward to the present day, many of my clients have expressed the joy of owning pearl-jewelry that include not only necklaces, but rings, earrings, bracelets and brooches as well.

What's more, they often mixed and matched their pearl jewelry with any other jewelry they have and they can choose to wear them at any time and on any occasion. Their motto is : You can never go wrong with classic pearl jewellery.

If one is not so adventurous, the rule of thumb is wearing smaller size pearls for casual wear during the day, while in the evenings or at formal occasions larger pearls; in short, jewelry with bigger pearls and diamonds are all the norm for evening wear. Larger pearls in more dramatic jewelry-settings are the perfect accessory to a cocktail dress or small formal outfit.

It is not surprising and rightly so that younger girls tend to prefer, and seem more suited to, smaller and more delicate pearl necklaces like those around the 3mm to 4 mm size range for round pearls or 4 to 5 mm in length for tiny rice-shape pearls.

Such necklaces make wonderful gifts for daughters, god daughters, bridesmaids or younger girls, as they can be worn throughout their lives and will always look appropriate, even in later years. A subtle and discreet pearl necklace can and will always look beautiful and appropriate.

Pearl necklaces make perfect ‘coming out’ gifts at age 16, 18 and 21.

Traditionally, these necklaces were given to a daughter by her father to mark the special birthday, but today, as pearl necklaces make beautiful gifts, we see these necklaces being given by either parent, grandparents or god-parents as special gifts.

Whatever we can think of and about pearls, one thing is for sure : Pearls can be for any woman and can be for any and all occasions. And one can never go wrong with pearls!
